Program Note
This suite comprises short five pieces, each with a distinct character. Movement I flows smoothly, driven by harmonic progressions and repetitive melodic gestures. The music unfolds naturally, maintaining a sense of continuity and coherence.
Movement II emphasizes rhythmic distinctiveness through the strategic use of rests. Sudden interruptions introduce an unpredictable element, and contrasting phrase lengths in the latter half create a dynamic ebb and flow. Chromatic elements add a unique quality, setting it apart from the rhythmically leaping patterns of the first half.
Movement III begins with rapid interplay between the right and left hands, generating an energetic blend of intervals. As it progresses, the back-and-forth exchange between inner and outer voices builds tension, reinforced by recurring phrases. With an increasing tempo, the piece surges forward toward an intense and exhilarating finish.
Movement IV slows the pace, incorporating inside-the-piano techniques and the performer’s voice to explore a wide range of timbres. The use of pedal deepens the sound, while ostinato patterns and ornamentations give the piece its distinctive character. Subtle dynamics draw the listener in, creating an intimate and immersive experience.
Movement V is the only one with a subtitle: Twilight. Dawn floods with emotions—longing, fear, melancholy, even pain. Yet, as twilight fades into morning, there is movement, a rush toward something new. This piece captures that moment—the surge of emotions, the race toward the first light of day, and the promise of a fresh beginning.
