Program Note
Reflection expresses the emotional burden that I faced during the difficult and depressing times of my twenties. The theme of this piece ‘my mind’, and each variation and its structure and flow stems from the various emotions during this turbulent period. This piece is a ‘free-form’ variation. The theme is separated into three parts, and each variation begins with a motif influenced by the theme’s melody, harmony, tone, and rhythm. The flow of time during my emotional hardship is mirrored by the sequence of the variations, such that the music feels like a narration of my twenties. The last section acts as an epilogue, which contrasts with the original theme’s flow to conclude in a more silent tone. Theme Var. I - Fear Var. II - Conflict Var. III - Strength Var. IV - Belief and Sincerity Var. V - Audacity Var. VI - Recovery Var. VII - Epilogue
